What is the most common hot water system in Australia?
About half of Australian households have a hot water storage tank that is powered by electricity. These are the least expensive systems to buy and install, so it makes sense. Unfortunately, they are also often the most expensive to run if you don’t have a solar system.
Electric Hot Water Storage Systems
In a hot water storage system the water is heated and kept in an insulated cylinder until you need it. The water is always hot and always ready. The heating element is near the bottom of the tank, since the hot water rises naturally, keeping the entire tank full and at temperature. Some off-peak systems use an additional boost element further up in the cylinder.
The insulated cylinders come in a variety of sizes, chosen based on the needs of your household. Call Ember Plumbing for expert advice on which size is right for your family.
Storage systems all lose heat through the cylinder walls, so you’re paying for the electricity even when you are not using any hot water. And the bigger the cylinder, the more heat you lose. The largest residential systems (160 to 400 litres) often use off-peak electricity powering overnight (usually 11 pm to 7am.) so you have lots of hot water for morning showers.
Mains Pressure Systems
Mains pressure systems are the most common type of hot water storage system. The mains pressure system makes sure the hot water slows at similar pressure and flow as the cold water. The aim is for being able to turn on more than one tap at a time without affecting the water pressure at the others.
So, the most common hot water system in Australia may not be the right one for your household. Every family has different needs, and every house has different requirements.
